Don’t waste money on a Xbox 360 Premium HDMI cable!
If you’re like me, you ordered the xbox 360 Premium instead of the 360 Elite because you wanted to save money. However, if you want HDMI going to your TV and Digital Optical to your surround sound, Microsoft has engineered the Premium in a way that requires you to purchase their HDMI cable with audio adapter for $49.99.

Because the HDMI and componet A/V cable slots are so close to one another, and the componet A/V casing is so thick, you cannot have both plugged in at the same time.
So the question remains, how can we stick it to the man and achieve HDMI video and Digital Optical audio without paying microsoft $50.
First, purchase a Hdmi Cable for less than $10.
Second, remove the plastic casing from the standard A/V cable. I did this by wedging a knife between the slit in the plastic casing and seperating the two sides. See the pictures below for the finished product:
Simple solution - cheap fix.

Posted 30 Sep 2007 at 9:09 pm ¶I still dont get how you do it?
Posted 01 Oct 2007 at 8:11 am ¶Does this go up to 1080p res as well, and supported though the one cable?
Could you show a more step by step guide for the technically inept such as myself.
Thanks
If you really wanted to save money and not pay Microsoft anything you would have bought a PS3 and out of the box enjoyed the use of both HDMI and optical audio without ripping crap apart.
Posted 01 Oct 2007 at 8:32 am ¶Andy,
This does still go through the 1080p resolution. You don’t do anything to the HDMI port. Basically what this does is it allows you to have both the HDMI cable and the A/V cable cable plugged in at the same time so can have Digital audio from the Digital Optical cable built into the A/V cable. Try to plug in a HDMI cable and the A/V cable the xbox came with - this will help clear everything up.
————————-
Matthew,
It isn’t about paying Microsoft ANYTHING - it is just annoying when they force you to pay for something that you really don’t need…
Posted 01 Oct 2007 at 9:14 am ¶@Matthew,
I’d hardly call buying a PS3 saving money - quite the opposite. They force crap upon you for a premium whether you want it or not. Even if you buy the cable you still spend less money than buying a PS3. Before you say anything I own all 3 next gen consoles so this isn’t “fanboy” crap just a spoiled 33 year old kid with nothing better to do with his money trying to be fair and objective.
As it sits right now the PS3 blows. That may change in the future but for now I just use my PS3 for Folding @Home when I’m not using it as a Blue-ray player because there isn’t anything decent enough to play on it for now.
Posted 01 Oct 2007 at 10:29 am ¶He rocks and M$ sucks that unbelievable they made the thing so that the old one couldnt fit to make u spend 50€ more for a fuckin cable and digital audio and even with that and an hd-dvd addon u wont have new HD audio codecs since hdmi 1.2 in the box doesnt support that ! Great Job ! Microsoft crackheads….
Posted 01 Oct 2007 at 10:58 am ¶haha I already did this
Posted 01 Oct 2007 at 6:20 pm ¶Doesn’t help anyone with an older premium that doesn’t have a HDMI port. Considering, you might as well buy an elite… which includes the digital audio adaptor…. and the larger harddrive. Although, probably wait til Thanksgiving to get one with the new Falcon chipset.
Posted 01 Oct 2007 at 8:19 pm ¶Funny thing is I just did this myself today because I’m sick of M$ taking my money. oh and the funny thing is the plastic on the av plug is just wasted space so it forces you to buy the hdmi kit from M$
Posted 01 Oct 2007 at 10:57 pm ¶Quick and dirty… very good job
Posted 02 Oct 2007 at 12:12 am ¶If your TV has a digital optical out, then you can just run the optical cable from the TV to your stereo. HDMI carries the digital audio signal to the TV, so you just need to get it from there to your receiver.
Posted 02 Oct 2007 at 2:19 am ¶Okay, now please someone shed some light on this:
I thought HDMI was supposed to transport BOTH video and audio through one single cable thereby eliminating the need for other plugs? So why do I still need the A/V cable for Digital Audio?
That doesn’t really make sense to me?
Posted 02 Oct 2007 at 2:43 am ¶“Matthew wrote:

this doesn’t really sound to me a way to save money …
Posted 02 Oct 2007 at 3:43 am ¶Wow people, this is not a place to have fanboy discussions.
Posted 02 Oct 2007 at 7:50 am ¶I agree with Matthew. Why buy an inferior product (360) from a money grabbing company (MS). And what are these things jc3 is on about (sony forcing you to have crap you dont want)?! Who doesnt want HDMI, who doesnt want WIFI. If you pay peanuts for s system, you get monkeys balls.
Posted 02 Oct 2007 at 7:57 am ¶Doesn’t HDMI support audio out? So couldn’t I have the TV Audio out run to my home stereo?
Posted 02 Oct 2007 at 8:58 am ¶I thought the HDMI cable included the audio on the same wire? Sorry Im a noob can someone tell me what this means?
Posted 02 Oct 2007 at 9:46 am ¶this hack is for people like me who have HDMI input on their TV, but no audio out on the TV - as well as not having an HDMI enabled receiver.
This hack allows us cheap bastards to use the HDMI video output from the xbox for a superior picture, and still use the digital optical output for sound going to our receiver. Thanks for the tip!
Posted 02 Oct 2007 at 11:27 am ¶Yes, HDMI supports both audio and video.
The difference here is some people have TVs that accept HDMI input but do not output a digital audio signal, which would then require the optical audio adapter.
Posted 02 Oct 2007 at 1:11 pm ¶You will not need an optical connection if you are running the hdmi cable through your processor(receiver) if compatible. If you only can run the HDMI directally to your TV you will need to find a way of feeding the receiver the audio signal.
Posted 02 Oct 2007 at 1:12 pm ¶“Doesn’t help anyone with an older premium that doesn’t have a HDMI port.”
possibly the silliest thing posted here (bar the pointless ps3 arguments)
as for MS ripping us off, the 360 has been out for nearly two years now, and back when they were designing the cables, there was nothing saying the HDMI port would be placed where it is - they didn’t craft the existing AV/component/VGA cables with the possibility of one day having to deal with an HDMI socket directly under the AV port, which is why there’s the separate connector bundled with the HDMI cable.
we could argue that they could’ve placed the hdmi port somewhere else where it wouldn’t cause this hassle, and that’s a more valid argument.
personally, i’ve filed the audio connector alongside the wifi dongle - they claim the dongle gives us a ‘choice’, but tbh it costs peanuts to manufacture yet sells at a ridiculous price, so it’s not about choice, it’s about making even more profit (or recouping more losses). upselling is what they call it. the same thing was levelled at nintendo for making us buy a little converter to use our headphones with the GBA SP…
Posted 02 Oct 2007 at 2:45 pm ¶That’s a cool idea. As for everyone else bitching about MS taking your money “Nobody is forcing you to buy their products to begin with - they are in this to make money”. If your not happy with what you have then quit wasting your money and our time with your posts and go read a book.
Posted 02 Oct 2007 at 6:36 pm ¶This worked great! I was pretty ticked off when I realized I couldn’t have my cake and eat it too. I have no doubt this “design flaw” was a calculated move to squeeze a few extra bucks out of us after the Premiums’ price drop. Microsoft most likely is still selling these machines at or near the cost of production, so they need make money on accessories - not at all unlike selling a cheap printer with expensive ink and branded paper. But that doesn’t mean you need to go along with their program. Save your money. Just be careful with that knife!
Posted 02 Oct 2007 at 7:01 pm ¶Great Job you sneaky sneaky individual…this is also a easy fix for someone who is using a HDMI to DVI cable that doesnt carry the digital audio to your Tv/Monitor.
Posted 02 Oct 2007 at 8:44 pm ¶So with this hack you still have to connect the a/v cables and the HDMI cable?
————————–
Chad: Yes, but this hack actually allows you to have both connected at the same time.
Posted 03 Oct 2007 at 1:22 am ¶thanks for the tip! i am having a problem though. it works great having them both plugged in until i change the source on my tv and then come back to the xbox360 when it completely restarts! it does not do this with only the hdmi or only the component cables connected. anybody else having this issue? thanks.
Posted 03 Oct 2007 at 9:19 pm ¶The connection feels preety cramped in the consol. Is there a chance this Hack will damage the either the HDMI or the “regular” output for the 360?
———————
Chad: Not sure - I hope not
Posted 04 Oct 2007 at 9:48 am ¶I used a Dremel for this trick myself– Cut a groove into the plastic– but I like this solution better, as it clears the whole cheap plastic housing out and makes it a bit more streamlined.
I added to this, though. I used electrical tape to cover the metal housing. I don’t like exposed electronics or shielding.
Theoretically, if you have an old HD AV cable lying around and don’t need the cable part of it (only the optical port) you could just cut off the cable and seal it off with electrical tape. Then you’d have a nice little adapter for no cost, as opposed to paying $50 to MS for their version (which is no doubt the same thing).
I love my XBox 360, but this “design flaw” was a cheap, desperate act and I am a little miffed at MS for pulling a stunt like that.

Most TVs with optical out only support stereo over the optical connection.

Posted 05 Oct 2007 at 8:32 am ¶Quick question, I’ve got a surround sound system hooked up to my computer and I’ve got an adapter that’ll hook up other devices to the speakers on my computer using the red and white audio cables on the composite connectors.
I’m not expecting the sound quality to be the best, but until I’m able to get a better system, would the composite connectors work using this method? Or does it only work with the optical cables?
—————————–
Posted 06 Oct 2007 at 7:31 pm ¶Chad: Yes, the composite connectors would work even without doing this. You only need to do this hack if you want HDMI and Digital Optical. If you are using composite connectors you can just plug and play.
Sorry, I forgot to mention that I’m going to be using an HDMI cable to connect to a computer monitor.
So what I’m really wondering is if the composite audio would work in conjunction with the HDMI?
—————————–
Posted 06 Oct 2007 at 11:29 pm ¶Chad: Yes, they will work in conjunction. GL!
Matthew is right.. you will save more money buying a PS3. All the games suck right now so basically, you won’t be spending money on games until mid 2008. Enjoy the savings, suckers!!!
Posted 12 Oct 2007 at 11:14 pm ¶Hi got som problem, dos not work whn i switch betvien channels (hdmi 1 to hdmi 2 pc sorce) when i shitch back the tv say no signal and it rebots Email me if you got an ansowr
Posted 18 Oct 2007 at 6:45 am ¶THANK YOU SO MUCH IT WORKED. I even had a thick hdmi cable but after removing the hard-plastic case both fit in.
Posted 20 Oct 2007 at 3:30 pm ¶Silly as to how simple the solution of this problem is.
Hey awesome, I spent hours trying to look stuff up and was looking at buying whatever I would need. Thanks man!
also to the others, most tv’s opticals out only do stereo and will not route the 5.1 from the xbox.
sure the ps3 does that out of the box, but ok, so now you have HDMI and your optical hooked up, what fucking games are you going to play?
Posted 21 Oct 2007 at 9:25 pm ¶thanks for that tip!!! I was sooo t.o.’d when i found i couldn’t hook the hdmi and the av/optical out at the same time…grrrr!! but, this did the trick. i did have a hard time using a knife to pry the casing apart, so i took a pair of channel lock plyers and used that to squeeze the top and bottom ends until it popped!!! then i was able to use a knife with little force to seperate it!! i am amazed at how much better the hdmi (1080p) looks compared to the av chord(1080i). it makes having a 1080p tv well worth it!!
for the record i have both a PS3 and a 360…I love them both! the fact that i have to have both to play blu-ray and hddvd sucks, but this way i have both plus two premium gaming stations for the same cost as having just a blu-ray player and an hddvd player…besides that i got heroes 1st season hddvd thrown in for no cost at best buy ($100 value)
do not buy an hddvd or bluray without these systems…it’s just not worth it to get anything of quality…but, that’s just my opinion, folks!!!
ps: I did have to shave my hdmi casing down a little bit, with a razor blade, but that was no biggie. overall this is a very easy and worthwhile fix…!!!
Thanks-again, Nick
Posted 23 Oct 2007 at 3:44 am ¶F*** yeah!

Posted 28 Oct 2007 at 4:48 am ¶Will this hack work on the original XBox 360 Premium that doesnt have the HDMI port built into the system?
Posted 01 Nov 2007 at 1:24 am ¶———————————
Chad: I’m not sure why you would do this hack if you don’t have HDMI. The whole point is to have HDMI and Digital Optical at the same time.
Cheers dude, I appreciate this, saved me quite a bit.
Posted 04 Nov 2007 at 11:12 am ¶Sweeeeeeeeeeeet!!!
Nice and simple and saved me $50. Thanks for the tip, Man.
Posted 08 Nov 2007 at 1:14 pm ¶This is Awesome!
I have my xbox hooked up to my 1080p DLP via HDMI and am getting the clearest picture; a much improved picture over the standard component cable.
Now I have the optical cable into my receiver and am getting digital surround sound.
Since I have this connected over HDMI, I actually cut off the remaining cable from the toggle so the only thing sticking out is the silver port where the optical cable goes in.
Another thing, I can play games through the tv speakers if it’s too late at night and don’t want to hear the surround sound all the time.
Great advice! Thank you!
Posted 09 Nov 2007 at 2:51 am ¶There can be no doubt that the huge wadge of plastic round that conector is unnesasery, the conector could have been made slim and would have enabled access to both ports, this is done to make you spend soem more bucks, thanks for this solution it is just what i neede to know , i thought about doing this but wondered if it would push the audio out of there with hdmi conected, thanks again for risking your xbox so I don’t have to
Posted 12 Nov 2007 at 10:52 am ¶I guess I don’t know why you needed to do this at all? I have HDMI running from my 360 to my TV and have a audio out from my TV running to my home stereo system. HDMI combines audio and video in one cable.
Posted 16 Nov 2007 at 11:48 am ¶I just noticed that the new xbox I bought had a switch on the side for TV/HDTV
If you have this cable and your TV can do HD with component then you can just use the provided AV cable on the HDTV setting and still get the same picture as HDMI.
Not all TV will do HD over components, mine is a 2007 samsung model.
If your TV can not do HD over components then you can still take apart the AV cable with the selector switch and still fit the HD cable in with the AV cable.
Also I found out according to Samsung the 2007 TV’s will not put out the sound from an HDMI cable with the fiber out port on the back of the TV. DUMB, but that is what Samsung told me?
Posted 18 Nov 2007 at 5:34 am ¶I have done the modification but need to use both Component and HDMI.preferably at the same time but its not nesecerally needed!!!!!
I have to get Componet to my HDTV ..and when i want to use my PJ i need HDMI for it …….waht will happen ???
Posted 18 Nov 2007 at 3:54 pm ¶the fact remains, it makes SO little difference to use HDMI to component HD cables (trust me Ive scrutinized the picture) that its really not worth doing
Posted 20 Nov 2007 at 4:55 pm ¶Thanks alot, awesome fix! I’m using a Dell 2407WFP monitor which I also have set up to a PS3, with audio going to my sound system. I was very surprised to find the HDMI port and the component port so close that I couldn’t just do the same thing! You saved me a lot of time and effort.
PGR4 and Halo 3 look so much better at 1080p compared to 720p! Thanks!
Posted 21 Nov 2007 at 5:22 pm ¶So I finally take the plunge and get a 360 only to get it home and be forced to tear something apart. Microsoft is the biggest bunch of jackasses ever conjured up in our capitalistic society. Scam artists and ripoffs. I don’t know why MS is so damn anti consumer. $50 for a stupid adapter and HDMI cable? That’s BS and this was a deceptive design flaw meant to screw the consumer. I like my system though.
Posted 24 Nov 2007 at 1:31 am ¶PS- this hack didn’t seem to work for me. My 360 would only respond to one imput at a time. It is a newer Falcon chip model, so I’m wondering if MS isn’t trying to cut us off again… Lame
I did this mod, and to be on the safe side, i wrapped some electric tape around the exposed metal. You SHOULD do this to protect your XBOX from shorting out!!
Posted 26 Nov 2007 at 8:16 pm ¶Worked great, I didn’t realize that this problem existed until I came home with the HDMI cable and wondered where to stick the optical cable, which kinda pissed me off, but all is well now, thanks dude.
Posted 30 Nov 2007 at 2:18 am ¶I’m having the same problem as “Xbox Newbie” with my new Arcadel supplied with the new chip model. First the MS-HDMI & Toslink cables package here in Sweden costs $78 incl tax. Instead I yesterday bought a component cable with toslink for $36 made by HAMÃ after reading this hack. Their Xbox360-connector is slim enough to allow you to also have the HDMI-cable connected at the same time. However, the Xbox did not allow output on HDMI when both connected. That, I got confirmed when I phoned Xbox support here i Sweden. This means that some connector pins might make an electric shortage to switch of the HDMI, or more sofisticated sense that the componet cables are connected to a TV. Have anyone tried to dig in to how it works and how to make a workaround?
————-
Posted 30 Nov 2007 at 5:38 am ¶Chad: Don’t plug in the Componet Video cables and the HDMI at the same time. This hack is just so you can have HDMI and Digital Optical running at the same time. Hope this helps!
Sorry, I wasn’t clear in my text. First i have the HDMI connected to my plasma giving image and sound through my TV-speakers. But I want an optical Toslink-connection instead to my Surround amplifier. So I only connect the Toslink in the component connector, leaving the component cables un-connected. When I then plug in the component Xbox-connector with the Toslink, my Xbox switches off the HDMI output and the plasma goes black!. If I then remove the component and Toslink connector from the Xbox Arcade, it rebots and my plasma shows the image again. Any idéa?
Posted 30 Nov 2007 at 6:50 pm ¶Speedy,
Posted 01 Dec 2007 at 6:02 pm ¶I have the same problem! This is what I found. I took the shell off the component cable so both connectors would fit. I can get it to work by starting with just the HDMI connected and then (with it on) plug in the component cable (only the toslink connected to my Dolby Digital receiver). When I do this the XBOX360 reboots and it is working (HDMI optimum display and Dolby Digital 5.1 to the stereo). If I then turn the 360 off and then on it will not boot up (must remove the component cable to start the 360 up again. There must be a hack to the component connector that can make this work but I don’t know it. HDMI looks way better especially with DVDs and taking the digital audio out from my HDTV only supplies stereo Dolby Pro Logic 5.1 at the receiver (which is crap compaired to Dolby Digital). I may just have to pony up the extra $50.
Later
Speedy,
I was on a mission tonight, I had to get this to work!
Look at this:
http://www.engadget.com/2006/11/14/how-to-turn-a-standard-xbox-360-video-cable-into-a-vga-cable-fo/
go down to the connector pin out photo.
This is the end with the wires of the connector in the shell of the component cable.
Cut the black wire jumper between 26&28
Posted 02 Dec 2007 at 4:54 am ¶25, 27, & 29 must be connected for the toslink to work
All the wires going to the RCA connectors side of the cable are of no concern (cut them off or leave them, but disconnected from other equipment).
There is also red, black, & white colored wires from 20, 22, & 24. My white wire broke off during testing. So I don’t know if you need to cut it or not. You need the red and / or black wire.
Put the switch in TV position and it works fine here.
HDMI & Toslink, beautiful! and no $50 charge!
Good luck if you want to try the same.

Keimei,
Posted 04 Dec 2007 at 6:28 pm ¶Many thanks for your fruitful advices! Yes, now it works, but only with a game in the DVD-player. I get the video-signal through the HDMI-cable and the digital sound through the audio-Toslink. But my main problem now arises when I connect my HD-DVD player and put a HD-DVD movie in it.. On the screen I get a message â€Secure HDCP-link not found†and the movie would not show, but the digital sound still works. So, any more idéas?
I have an elite purchased recently (12/2007)
Please note that while the HDMI cable does support both Audio and Video. The 360 limits the audio on the HDMI to Stereo PCM 48.
If you want better Audio, like Dolby Digital, you need to use the Optical Toslink Cable. (By any means)
If you dont want to take any cables apart, I’m pretty sure there should be cheaper 3rd party cables by now that do the same thing.
And remember, a digital connection is pretty good as it is. This is especially true for Optical ones. The signals are pretty far apart to get mixed up. It doesn’t really make much sense to buy a US$50 cable for a digital connection.
Posted 06 Dec 2007 at 1:54 am ¶does it work for an old core system?
—————
Posted 06 Dec 2007 at 3:57 pm ¶Chad: Only if your system has HDMI.
Oops, that was the receiver’s fault. Actually a bad setup.
If you set your reciever to passthrough the HDMI audio to the TV. The TV might report it only supports Stereo to the whole chain, all the way to the XBOX.
The fix, don’t tell your reciever to passthrough the Audio (if it has that option)

Posted 09 Dec 2007 at 3:44 am ¶If you are having the problem with your 360 rebooting with this hack plugged in, all you have to do is switch the HD/TV switch on the connector to TV. If it is in the HD position, it makes the 360 boot. In the TV position, it will allow High Def through the HDMI cable and audio through the component cable adapter.

Maybe we can remove a pin or two in the component cable?

Just a heads up for those of you wishing to run HDMI to your TV and then Optical Digital Output to an amplifier:
Firstly, the 360 does not output digital surround sound via the HDMI cable (only stereo) and secondly, not all TV’s output digital surround from all sources. My Sony 40″ ‘V’ series only outputs digital surround from a digital TV signal. Devices connected to the TV will not output thru the optical digital output.
Cheers

Just cut my hand doing it with a screw driver
But it works very nicely! Well worth the pain!
Posted 28 Dec 2007 at 11:56 am ¶Well I did the fix. It is a tight fit but it works fine.
I saw a retail picture of what that optical out wire is and it is just the same old AV out without the video. There was no way in hell I was going to pay $50 for something I already had. The plastic casing made the thing way too thick to plug both these cables in. I had two HDMI cables. I had to use the one with the thinnest head to make it just barely squeeze in.
Posted 28 Dec 2007 at 8:37 pm ¶The thing many here seem to miss is that with the new TV’s because of the copy protection built in the HDMI cable does indeed send digital sound to the TV. It is just not allowed to be passed on through the sound out connection to a Receiver or other sound system. So my new Samsung TV either had 1080i through the Component inputs which can pass on sound or 1080P through the HDMI input with the lousy speakers the TV came with.
This posting of the work around saved me the cost of the MS HDMI cable set. I used my Dremel tool to carefully remove the amount of plastic from the MS plug & my HDMI cable to allow a perfect fit for both leaving the RF metal protector etc. A little care taping them together and it looks like it came together.
Posted 29 Dec 2007 at 6:29 pm ¶What a money saver! you don’t need to buy a thin hdmi cable to do this, once the plastic is off the component cable you can easily seperate the 2 bits that make up the internals. I have a Lynx hdmi cable with a massive connection and this method does the trick.
Posted 30 Dec 2007 at 1:16 pm ¶I have the same problem as Tyler Sand, when I change sources on my TV the xbox restarts which is a bit annoying as I can’t watch TV while the xbox download demos and movies, any ideas?
Cheers
Posted 01 Jan 2008 at 11:07 am ¶Phil
I’m having the same problem the solution looks great. Just one question does it break the warranty? I guess it doesn’t because surely it only affects the component cable and if it breaks you can but a new one?
Those three red lights dont like me =[
Posted 02 Jan 2008 at 8:25 am ¶yeah, you are basically making it soo both the hdmi can fit into its slot and the regular composite cable can fit into it’s spot , however you just use the optical plug in the composite hook up so you can still have hdmi 1080p and optical sound, the other wires just end up on the floor. I would like to know if I could just break em off or cut them to get rid of all the slack.
Posted 02 Jan 2008 at 3:38 pm ¶Can I leave a regular TV (using composite so 480i)hooked up at the same time as the HDMI? I realize they would not work on the same resoutions, but would anything bad happen if I do this?
I have a 22″ computer monitor that I would like to use occasionally for HD experience, but otherwise I want to use the old 32″ CRT TV.
Great page by the way
Posted 02 Jan 2008 at 7:18 pm ¶Worked great, thanks.
If I cut off the extra component cables I don’t need, will it affect anything?

Posted 03 Jan 2008 at 9:30 am ¶Chad: The open wires could cause a short. I wouldn’t cut them. Just tie them up and try to hide them.
I thought of doing it, but I never had the balls to do it untill i saw this.
Posted 04 Jan 2008 at 5:08 pm ¶This $9.39 third party Xbox 360 VGA cable solved the problem for me:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=108&cp_id=10830&cs_id=1083005&p_id=4010&seq=1&format=2
I was able to get simultaneous video output through HDMI and optical audio output through the Toslink connector in the VGA cable. No connector smashing or $50 Microsoft cable required and I have the option of using VGA instead of HDMI if I prefer.
My HDMI cable fits well under the VGA connector housing as it is moulded a little thinner than the OEM Microsoft AV connector. I still shaved my HDMI housing down a bit to improve the fit, but nothing drastic.
This setup also worked perfectly with my Xbox HD DVD player and didn’t cause any problems with HDCP. Both my Xbox console and HD DVD player are about a month old. Hope this helps.

Posted 09 Jan 2008 at 12:07 pm ¶I wonder if anyone has ripped apart their Optical/RCA Audio adapter to see what the pin outs are compared with these ones from the included component cable, http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2006/11/wiring3_engadget_howto.jpg
I bet that it doesn’t have connections for either pin 20 or 24. That is probably why some people who have done this mod are having issues with rebooting (posts 34, 50, 53-57). Most equipment that uses HDMI seems to be autosensing. With this mod, the XBox is being told that you are using the component/composite video out, and then when it see’s the HDMI port has a connection it gets confused.
More than likely the audio adapter only has connections for pins 15 & 16 for analog audio and 25, 27, & 29 for digital audio.
I am going to try and get my hands on a second hand XBox component cable and try to modify the wiring like this, plus leave the extra plastic off
Posted 11 Jan 2008 at 9:21 pm ¶Kudos man… really helped me out .. and saved me like $100
i only stabbed my hand with the screwdrivers twice
Posted 13 Jan 2008 at 9:37 pm ¶Update:
Okay, so I just realized I have a Madcatz universal component video cable that has connections for PS2, XBox, and XBox 360(with optical audio connection). The XBox 360 connector on this is much slimmer than the one that comes with the system and therefore fits with the HDMI cable plugged in underneath.
I cut the XBox 360 connector off, plugged it into the system, plugged in my optical audio cable and my HDMI. Everythying works!
Now the problem:
The Madcatz cable has an HDTV-TV switch on it, but it is not in the connector, but instead down on the cable. When I cut the connector off, I no longer have the switch. So, in essence I now have no selection made on the switch. Now unless there is something funny wired in the connector, my original hypothesis on having neither component or TV selected stopping the rebooting problem seems to be wrong. So I wonder if in the Optical/RCA Audio adapter they possibly connect the two pins together for component and TV? Just in case anyone is thinking this, yes, I did try this with the cable intact before I cut it, and I tried it with the switch on both TV and HD and it didn’t make a difference.
I just need someone out there with the Optical/RCA Audio adapter to open it up and see how it is wired. Come on, someone out there must be curious.
Posted 14 Jan 2008 at 9:15 am ¶I did something similar. I took a razor blade and shaved the rubber/plastic casing off the end of the HDMI cable. I bought a $4 HDMI cable, knowing I was going to try and shave the casing off. It works great, so I get both optical 5.1 audio and a nice 1080p image on my TV.
I don’t have any fancy pictures though, I just shaved the HDMI cable down so the bare gold foil shielding is visible on both sides so it can bend slightly.
Posted 16 Jan 2008 at 1:20 am ¶Hey im about to do this i was going to try a dremel and cut that plastic to size , does this let you use hdmi and optical cable at the same time if so im assuming the switch on the optical part has to be on hdtv .
sorry bout the stupid questions
Posted 16 Jan 2008 at 1:32 pm ¶The issue with pcm 48khz audio over hdmi is becuase the xbox hdmi is only hdmi ver 1.2
hdmi ver1.3 supports full audio i vbelive over hdmi so unless a sw update ont eh xbox part can sort this your stuck with doing this mod. for record, pins
25 - Digital Audio out
27 - Digital Audio Gnd
29 - Digital Audio +5v
18 + 20 - linked for vga
22 + 24 l- linked for RGB (SCART) mode

Posted 18 Jan 2008 at 1:20 pm ¶I was about to start spending even more money to have my xbox 360 HDMI to DVI on a 22inch monitor with the ability to have a 5.1 Optical output to my surround amp.
Don’t spend the money, do this instead.
Just to add, it would be advisable to surround exposed part with some electrical tape.
Posted 25 Jan 2008 at 12:46 pm ¶Just to add F**K PS3. It might have all the future innovations that the 360 don’t have but here’s why i’m pleased.
XBOX 1 - became easily chipable, this then made people want an xbox. MS let this happen to improve the product.
XBOX 360 was not rushed (mabe a little) it had all the innovations for the time and now MS have had time to improve the xbox live side of things.
By 2012 technology with have moved on dramatically, Discs will hold 60gb and be half the size by then, think about how technology has moved on in the past three years, MS will then bring out a XBOX 3 which will kick arse leaving PS3 with about 5 years to go until their expected 10yr technology playablity runs out FAST.
Roll on Xbox 3, i don’t mind paying MS money for new consoles and a measy £5 a month for live but still against the other money making workings.
While the PS3 rolls on past 2012, expect the new XBOX to contain real life graphics, where you’ll think your playing the characters in a ‘MOVIE’ rather than playing a game, you’re friends will wall in while playing Call of Duty 6 of Halo 5 and will say

Thanks, Hombre. After 2 months of delayed gratification getting my home theatre set up (using the soon to be deprecated Pioneer Xbox audio and an Infocus DLP projector), this really came in handy.
I was pissed as hell when I ran into the physical interference problem. I didn’t even know about the $50 cable, otherwise I would have bought it beforehand.
You’ve lowered my blood pressure. For today…

Posted 28 Jan 2008 at 8:27 am ¶Can I ask someone in the know please. My needs are different as I am running HDMI into a 2nd room, and the Component and digital audio in my main room. This was so i can choose what room to play the Xbox in. The question is: Will the Xbox send a+v signals out via both cables at the same time? Thanks to anyone who may be able to answer this one.
Yep - that did it. Thanks! Now I just have to put my thumb together where I sliced it off with a screwdriver…

Posted 07 Feb 2008 at 7:46 pm ¶I found an HDMI Cable new on ebay for 9 bucks! Great buy…
Posted 08 Feb 2008 at 5:45 pm ¶Thanks man,
I have no HDMI in my TV, so I got the HDMI to DVI. I was tres disappointed when I found no sound. I am quite the avid electronics person, and could not figure out why my sound was not working. After tinkering with all of my settings, I finally called XBOX…BIG MISTAKE!! They are so incompetant, the rep barely knew what the difference between an HDMI and HD AV cable was. Anyways, I just took apart my HD av cable, so I am excited to go home and feed this through my receiver and hear the 5.1 sound that you have made possible for me…hopefully. Now I just need to get my PS3 to recognize my HDMI. Thanks again. Brian
Posted 11 Feb 2008 at 11:29 am ¶Well I tried this and didnt work for me. Got the plastic off the component cable and started carving off the plastic on the hdmi cable. Hit a piece of copper wire in the HDMI cable and decided to stop cutting. Still didnt fit. I might have been able to force it but I dont want to break the HDMI port on the 360. Ended up I didnt break the HDMI cable and I the plastic went right back on the component cable so no damage other than cosmetic. At least it was worth a try. Guess I have to shell out the $50. DAMN YOU M$
Posted 15 Feb 2008 at 8:53 pm ¶HDMI does carry the Audio to the TV (or your reciver if you use one) BUT most go to there TV nothing in the middle. But then how are you going to get your Surround Sound. Most TV’s dont have digital audio out, so what he shows you in this is how to get optical audio to your surround sound device, so you get a GREAT pic (on a crappy cable format, BLASTED HDMI YOU SUCK!!!!) and surround sound audio!!
Thanks for putting this up, I will end up doing this with all my clients so they get both HDMI and Surround sound in their theaters!

Posted 02 Mar 2008 at 6:44 pm ¶I came up with this same solution this weekend after I realized that M$ had hosed me on the toslink connection for my Pro. Instead of using the component cable, I used a very cheap nockoff that I had previously gotten from ebay. I used a Dremel tool instead of a screw driver and reused half of the grey casing so that I could sturdy the port. I later wrapped the entire thing in electrical tape. Everything works great and I didn’t half to play into this porting scam.
Posted 03 Mar 2008 at 3:15 pm ¶KUDOS!!!
I bought the $10 HDMI cable and my spirits dropped when I discovered it wouldn’t fit with that stupid plastic. This fix was quick and easy and made me realize how cheap Microsoft is. I got the plastic off easier by putting it in a large pair of vise grips and squeezing until the plastic popped off. No wounds! Picture is amazing and I got the sound to work through the output in the back of my 32″ Sony Bravia HDTV.

Posted 10 Mar 2008 at 7:17 pm ¶Got myself that M$ cable today, got home and unpacked it, but alas… no HDMI port on my 360!
Oh well, it’ll make another fine addition to my box of “stuff-i-didn’t-really-need-but-bought-on-a-whim” I guess.
M$ might want to consider marking the package a bit more clearly that not all 360’s come with HDMI ports. As of now, it’s in (very) fine print.
Posted 18 Mar 2008 at 2:40 pm ¶This worked out amazingly, mostly so because if you want to put the case back onto it, it looks just about the same if you didn’t chop it up trying to get it off.
Posted 18 Mar 2008 at 11:10 pm ¶Thanks dude, tis a good way to stick it to the man.
Posted 19 Mar 2008 at 6:43 pm ¶Thanks for this. After cutting myself with the screwdriver and knife a few times, I got the case to come off and it works great, even with my 7.1 surround sound system.
Posted 23 Mar 2008 at 2:36 am ¶allright this is what i did i used a dvi adapter to hmi to the monitor and then i used the av cable for the external sound. like everyone else when i changed to vga or vice versa my xbox was restarting so what i did is on the dvi adapter to the monitor i took off that long piece on the connector and now my dvi adapter only has the main pins and when i switch to vga or back my xbox works good. So what i found out is that the piece i took off the adapter it was the analog side of the adapter so when u switch devices on the monitor it was conflicting with that so if u are never going to use the adapter for analog then u are good to go and i got the adapter at dealextreme its a hdmi-f to dvi-m and it was cheap. allright well im pretty sure i misspelled and bad grammar but just wanted to let everyone know that this cable mod works….
Posted 23 Mar 2008 at 12:47 pm ¶Does anyone know whether the standard, composite AV cable that comes with current “Arcade” bundles has an optical out jack? From this picture, it looks like it does not:
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51NyOUKnSOL._SS400_.jpg
So I’m guessing I would need to buy an additional cable that does have the optical connector in order to use this hack.
If anyone knows for sure, I’d love to know. Thanks!

It just passed the sound to the TV.
No amplification.
I thought this would work with the analog audio

DAM Sony for their crap
Posted 25 Mar 2008 at 10:11 pm ¶cheers for that Chad - just tried it and it works perfectly!
Posted 29 Mar 2008 at 2:34 pm ¶Hey thanks man - you just saved me £30!
Posted 31 Mar 2008 at 3:48 pm ¶I just made a optical digital audio + coaxial digital audio + standard LR analog audio out for use with an HDMI or HDMI to DVI cable. All audio outs work all the time.
If you are making your own, you have to make sure you ground the pins on the adapter that tell the xbox to use Component out, if the composite video pins are grounded ( as in getting the audio from an old composite video cable or a dual composite/component cable that is switched to compostie) then you will not be able to select high resolutions, also your XBOX may reset itself once in awhile because it is confused. If no video pins are grounded, the audio is not passed through the adapter.
Posted 01 Apr 2008 at 10:50 am ¶OMG thenks man you saved me 50 dollar!!!
Posted 01 Apr 2008 at 10:55 am ¶That is indeed a good idea. Except for buying a HDMI cable for $10, though. Not many people may not notice it, but the price & brand of the HDMI actually does affect the video quality. I’m not telling people buy a $129AUD MONSTER HDMI cable or something. But in my case, I already bought a full gold-plated HDMI cable for $60. I don’t want to spend another $59 just to use Microsoft’s HDMI+Optical Audio adapter with an extra HDMI cable lying around.
And note that if you don’t want to make so much damage to the Component cable’s plastic casing, you can just gently stab & twist a little opening at where the cable is actually inserted & secured to hold into the casing. I hope you know what I mean.
Posted 04 Apr 2008 at 3:56 am ¶Also, another thing. There are some people (like me) that own HDTVs with HDMI but don’t have an optical output, that’s why this hack to some of us.

Posted 07 Apr 2008 at 3:30 pm ¶SO SAVE ME FOR EXPEND 100 DOLARS!!!
FROM ARGENTINA, THZ!!!
DUDE!!! Thanks a million! Or shall i say, thanks a fifty! Because you just saved me $50 for doing this simple trick, due to the Micro$oft’s greedy, manipulative design scheme by preventing their customers from enjoying HDMI and optical audio on the 360 Pro.
WTF is wrong with them? My PS3 works perfect with its HDMI and optical audio out port PROPERLY spaced apart. M$ should be ashmed of themselves.
Posted 09 Apr 2008 at 11:00 am ¶Hello again,
In my last post I just thanked you for your sharing your idea, but didn’t actually TRY it until last night, and it WORKED LIKE A CHARM! I can now play Halo 3 in glorious 1080p and true Dolby 5.1 sound, without paying $59.99 CDN for Micro$oft’s HDMI cable SCAM (because that’s what it is).
However I’d like everyone to know that YOU DON’T NEED A KNIFE to remove the plastic housing. All I did was use some vice-grip pliers to squeeze the housing along the parting line / seam until you hear a slight crack, which just means it broke the glue seal. Then all you need is a basic screw driver to dig into the parting line (just like the very top picture) and you can gently and easily pry the two halves apart. That’s it! It wasn’t difficult at all.
I already have an expensive HDMI cable (cost $89, two years ago) and I didn’t have to shave it down at all. I first inserted the M$ adaptor (less the ridiculous plastic housing of course), then I was able to insert my HMDI cable underneath with a very slight bend downward, but it was no big deal, they were BOTH able to fit in just fine.
So there you go, thanks again amigo!
PS - My 52″ LCD does have digital optical out, and I did connect it to sound system first, but it only transmits in Dolby STEREO, and NOT true 5.1 surround sound, that’s why this method is worth the 2 minutes of your time.
Posted 10 Apr 2008 at 10:29 am ¶WOW! easiest hack I’ve ever done! It literally took me 30 seconds! I could have gotten it off faster but I took a few more seconds, so as not to scratch or chip the plastic housing. This was so easy! Thanks so much! I thought I was going to have to buy the HDMI cable from MS! Saved me 50 bucks, thanks!
Posted 10 Apr 2008 at 5:47 pm ¶HOLY SHIT… popped that puppy off and saved $50! Thanks so much!!!!! I’ll link ya on me myspace!

Still, this is great, so far I had only heard rumors about this trick, now I know it will work!
THANX!
Posted 17 Apr 2008 at 2:24 am ¶Tried this and not working for me….
With only the component cable plugged in switched to either TV or HD, both outputs work fine.
Repeat except also plugging in the HDMI cable, no video or sound on any of the outputs no matter what the HD/TV switch is set to. Unplugging both the component and composite cables from the TV does not seem to have any effect.
With only the HDMI cable plugged in, no output.
Any ideas?
Posted 18 Apr 2008 at 5:44 pm ¶Awesome, thanks a ton! I figured they designed the plug to be extra big because it would only output one or the other (hdmi or composite), and so thought I needed the $50 adapter. Finding this site via google saved me from forking it over to Microsoft, thanks again

Not one to waste time posting a comment but last night I found I couldn’t plug both into my brand new 360 (got it for GTA4) and my TV is a wall mount. I’d have to run components to the receiver and it would have been such a bitch I couldn’t have done it. I was so god damn angry about it last night - you completely saved my ass. THANK YOU!
Posted 09 May 2008 at 7:48 am ¶Thanks so much for this info. I bought an xbox 360 recently to play thru my Acer 20″ LCD with a DVI-D input. I found a dirt cheap HDMI to DVI-D cable from Monoprice but have no sound solution yet. Now with your hack I can hopefully find an RCA to 3.5mm adaptor so I can use my Zalman headset! Awesome hack and much appreciated!!

thanks a bundle!
Microsoft can suck a fat one!
Posted 09 May 2008 at 11:02 am ¶Thanks for the tip. I was mad after I bought a $40 hdmi to dvi cable only to find out that I couldn’t run the sound into a separate speaker system but a quick google led me to this tip and now everything is working great! Thanks for saving me $50!
Posted 16 May 2008 at 8:00 pm ¶Works like a charm. First google result I came across when I realized that my tv wouldn’t pass 5.1 through. Thanks a lot.

Posted 18 May 2008 at 5:16 pm ¶I didnt read through each post, but I would like to add how I tweaked this how-to…
I used my dremel rotary wheel to cut a square out of the giant connector and then replaced it around the cable end.
This leaves the cords secure, but still allows the use of an HDMI cable.
I taped mine back together (lazy) but some glue and silicone sealant would work just as well (to keep out dirt)
Hi All.
I have a xbox 360 Pro with the HDMI port but, once I have both the HDMI and the modified bare component cable plugged in - my xbox freezes up?
It only works when only one of the connections are used?
I have heard that it works with both plugged in and from others that it doesnt….
Is there a solution to this problem??
Please help ASAP!
Thanks.
Posted 20 May 2008 at 2:54 am ¶Im tried the hack and it works great BUT the 1080p option in the XBOX360 setting is greyed out and I cannot choose it. I can chose all others but right now I have to settle for 720p. My Ps3 is 1080p. Im using a generic no name cable. Could that be it? Its that Picky??

Posted 29 May 2008 at 1:39 pm ¶Quick Question. I am planning on doing this hack but I am very picky about cables being around. I am going HDMI out of my xbox. Could I cut the Video cables off the standard A/V cable and have this hack still work?

Do i need to do this hac to get sound …as the xbox does nto ahve any sound output …
Man this is lame ,…
This seems to work, but the metal casing under the plastic one is still a put bulky and does push at the HDMI cable plug a bit.
Still great easy hack and way to save money. Thank you!
Posted 02 Jun 2008 at 8:18 pm ¶Very nice tip, I was looking like hell after the optical output, couldn’t in my wildes dreams believe it would be on the A/V cable, at least it was refreshing butchering it wide open when I found out…

Do we need to do any formatting to the tv. When we plug it in it doesn’t show up on the HDMI setting or on the component either. Please help us. We don’t know what to do and it’s frankly making me angry.
Posted 08 Jun 2008 at 4:53 pm ¶I bought the core system so the standard plug doesnt have the optical output. I have an s-video cable instead. I tried your mod and when the hdmi and the s-video cable are connected at the same time i lose all video. Does this mod not work with the s-video or am i doing something wrong.

Microsoft what absolute wankers! Charging 20% of the purchase price of the unit for nothing!
Posted 17 Jun 2008 at 3:39 am ¶And @GTAHH - mine works with both cables plugged in just fine, but I’m using the RCA out, not digital audio out. Interestingly, there is a 1/4 second delay between the audio that comes out of the HDMI (on my LCD screen) and the stereo I have the RCA’s plugged into.

Posted 28 Jun 2008 at 11:16 am ¶Using the composite cables that came with the now defunct core systems, you can fit both HDMI and the audio. These cables can usually be found used at a local gamestop or the like, or cheap on ebay.
Sorry if its already been posted, i didn’t have time to read all of them, but for those who dont want to harm their electronics, it can work for the extra 5 bucks
this sounds sweet but my problem is i have no opitical input on my surround sound reciever .All it has is a scart connection an nothing else is it possible to play the sound from my 360 with this setup.
Posted 29 Jun 2008 at 3:34 pm ¶If you are having problems with your xbox resetting if you move to a different input on the TV and back as some have reported above, simply take the metal casing off for a second, and find a black wire that loops from the plug back to the plug on the side where the audio connector is located..
Cut that black loop and you won’t have problems with the xbox resetting. I swear I kept the connector switched to “TV” instead of “HD” but it would the xbox would still reset. Cutting the black loop fixed this.

Hi, i just want to ask if it could be possible that with connecting both cables something inside the 360 gets destroyed. Because of the fact that my Samsuns LCD can’t switch to HDMI any more, while my console is off.
Posted 11 Jul 2008 at 7:38 pm ¶This was possible before i used both cables.
Can anyone confirm this? and if so, is there any possibility to fix this? Maybe the thickness of the standart AV-Plug has another reason, not only for making $
I LOVE U!!!!
Posted 16 Jul 2008 at 8:46 pm ¶Awesome thanks a lot, it works really well. But it ended up being easier prying the casing apart from the area that the TV and HDTV switch is on the cable. Thanks again!
Posted 01 Aug 2008 at 1:47 am ¶Just wanted to let you know this worked PERFECTLY WELL. I used a swiss army knife so its a small and thin little blade that opened it up easily - note to others who try this, you want to ‘twist’ at every spot, not just in the center. Keep prying and the other side comes off easily.

Posted 14 Aug 2008 at 11:32 pm ¶Oh hell yes! This was a saver:
I own a 3-4 year old Sony Grand Wega 42″ LCD 720p projection.. and the effing thing, all be it has a toslink for digital out out on the back, ONLY OUTPUTS THE DIGITAL AUDIO FROM THE HDTV TUNER SOURCE! ARGH!!
That means that even though I had HDMI from my 360 to my TV, and a toslink out to toslink in on my reciever– the flipping TV wouldn’t output the audio since it only does that for HDTV “television” stations.. not the A/V channels.
This allowed me to just dump the audio directly from my xbox360 to the toslink in on my reciever and get digital audio w/out the added cost of that lame-o cable they sell!! awesome!!
Anywho.. my story is one reason why people have to do this (instead of doing HDMI to tv, then d/a to reciever.. oh and my reciever does not do HDMI passthru like the big $$$ ones do.. hehe).

Posted 20 Oct 2008 at 4:16 pm ¶It should be noted that if you use this hack and you leave your xbox on, then switch to another input, then back to the xbox input again, YOUR XBOX WILL RESTART.
Posted 21 Oct 2008 at 12:51 am ¶After having the reboot issue when changing the A/V source, I made some tests with an original Optical/RCA Audio Adapter and I found that there are some minor differences between the Optical/RCA Audio Adapter and the Component A/V cable. [missing some pins and connections].
First I cut off all the cables from pin 1 to 16 and the hdtv/tv switch cables [20-22-24], then I made direct connections between pins 20-26 and 22-24. I also had to cut the connection between the two pins 26 and 28.
You have to make sure that the connector fits well into the xbox, because if you don’t the lower pins, 20 to 26, could not be making good contact causing the reboot of the xbox when changing your A/V source back to the xbox 360. I had to bend the metal case of the adapter to make it fit well.
Check my diagram [the diagram from the bottom is how my hack looks like]:

Great tutorial!! Had this exact problem after buying an excellent 6$ HDMI 10ft cable from monoprice.com. Now I have a superior cable with 5.1 Dolby audio for the price of 6$ and 2 minutes reading the above and opening up the cable cover. Greedy M$ bastards!! I’ve exchanged 4 360s since it came out and they want more, more, more. This is definitely a way to stick them and other thieves like Monster Cable. Funniest thing is that a lot of ppl don’t realize that since HDMI signal is 100% digital, there can be no good or bad quality of signal, it’s either you get signal or you don’t.
Posted 24 Oct 2008 at 1:57 pm ¶this is great. But does it do exactly the same as the offical cable. The reason I ask is that now I have got it rigged like this the xbox somtimes fails to start. It starts to make a sound and then I get NO SIG Message and the sound goes off. If I tryit 5 or six time it eventualy starts and runs fine all night. If i revert it back all is fine.
Can you let me know?

Posted 29 Oct 2008 at 4:39 am ¶Tom
Why bother hacking your cables to bits? HDMI supports both audio and video. There are two better alternatives:
1. Connect the HDMI cable to your display and use your TV’s SPDIF output to connect your audio subsystem.
2. Connect the HDMI cable to your A/V receiver’s HDMI input and use your A/V receiver’s HDMI output to connect your display.
The only issue is the display’s decoder delay; however, a decent audio processor can compensate with adjustable output delay.
Posted 30 Oct 2008 at 11:21 pm ¶This is great, now I can hook it up to my computer. Thanks so much for the help.
Posted 01 Nov 2008 at 11:50 am ¶I tried this hack, but when i plug the normal AV cable (with the case cracked off) in beside the HDMI cable, it turns off the HDMI video output and reboots the console. Giving me no video but 5.1 audio…
Anyone else share this problem?
Posted 03 Nov 2008 at 6:12 pm ¶Right, well it turns out that 3rd party AV cables caused the problem i had above. So use an official Microsoft AV cable if you want to use this hack.
As far as the system rebooting when you change AV channel on your TV? Check out post number 242 by Ron007. Gonna have a go at his hack at some stage soon!

Posted 15 Nov 2008 at 1:27 am ¶ill have to do this to fit both hdmi and composite cables because i have a tv with a dvi input and dvi doesnt carry sound, so the comosite plug with the audio will take care of that while the hdmi to dvi cable hooks my video up phat!
Posted 16 Nov 2008 at 6:19 am ¶I did not learn about this mod until after purchasing the microsoft HDMI/optical adaptor. But I’ve read some people that did this mod are having similar problems as myself. My problem is that I only get video from my hdmi cable. (and the hdmi audio out of the tv). But I dont get the optical audio out of my reciever. Also the xbox restarts every time I switch the input on my tv. After some troubleshooting, the only way I got both the HDMI video And the optical audio to work is by disconecting the HDMI cable so that only the optical adaptar/cable is connected. Then turning on the xbox. It does not boot up fully, it looks like its in a standby mode or something. I then re-connect the hdmi cable and the xbox begins to fully boot up. Thats the only way to get both video and audio. But I have to do this everytime I turn on my xbox, witch is a pain! I ruled out my A/v reciever as the problem. It is definitely the xbox that is confused about both outputs simultaneously. Is there a way to let the xbox know that I want hdmi video out and Optical audio out from the adapter??? Please help!!!

Posted 18 Nov 2008 at 2:39 am ¶REAL SIMPLE FOR ALL YOU WHO ARE UNCLEAR:
HDMI out on the XBOX 360 outputs all supported video resolutions including 1080p just like the component RGB HD output does. However the original fat chunky connector (which is shown being broken apart) has an optical output on it.
Unlike the PS3 the Xbox only outputs 2ch Digital Sound via HDMI and not a surround soundtrack. Therefore you’ll need to plug in HDMI and Optical together in order to get the best of both worlds.
However they both don’t fit so Microsoft have made a slimer one that fits in above the HDMI to give you optical, we are simply modding the old one.
And all you who say you should have a bought a PS3 have to remeber that Xbox 360 was enjoying it’s 3rd Christmas when the PS3 came out, what were you doing for 2 years still playing PS2?
Good for you!
High Def gaming is not a new thing to us, I have both so I don’t really care, and yes, PS3 does have HDMI 1.3 and 7.1 channel output via HDMI and Bluray, but give me 2 and half years and I could probably improve on the PS3 in my bedroom with a blowtorch and screwdriver.
Posted 19 Nov 2008 at 10:32 am ¶easy fix! But I needed you to tell me. Wouldn’t have tried it otherwise! Love the attitude btw.
Posted 22 Nov 2008 at 8:05 pm ¶This method works unless switching the video source on your television, in which case the xbox defaults to the information coming from the newly mangled A/V cable and assumes that connection was lost thereby going to standby mode turning off whatever was currently playing – without saving any information.

Posted 25 Dec 2008 at 6:26 pm ¶Xbox 360 arcade:
if you have a tv with an hdmi input you don’t need this.
just run a $5 HDMI cable (new egg) from the xbox 360 output to your tv hdmi input. The HD video AND digital audio will carry through to your tv in one cable.
however, if like the original poster, you plan on running the 360 to your computer monitor using a dvi/hdmi adapter, the AUDIO signal will be LOST in the adapter, not to mention computer monitors don’t have speakers, hack away
The component cable is purposely large and covers the hdmi port to prevent two video outputs being connected, not to MAKE you buy some accessory.
if your HD tv has only rgb component connections, you need the xbox hd component cable that fits in the component port, don’t bother with the hdmi port, or some adapter to go with hdmi
if you don’t have an hd tv why are you reading this, just plug original cable in

(receiver had not been configured to accept an optical signal for this channel). Before I realized this, I pulled out the console (with game playing) it slipped, and now I have a coaster because it scratched it beyond all recognition.

Posted 04 Jan 2009 at 8:37 am ¶Great fix. Very easy.
Is it advisable to wrap the component cable with a layer of electrical tape or something? Is there a fire hazard if I use this for extended playtimes?
Posted 06 Jan 2009 at 9:08 pm ¶This works great! Thanks for sharing.
Posted 06 Jan 2009 at 11:31 pm ¶so basically I could just cut off rest of the cables and leave just AV connector with optical out like that? or is it necessary to have them there, reason for this is I got so many cables behind my telly already, and this just messed it up a bit more… thanx in advance
Posted 07 Jan 2009 at 11:29 pm ¶Mostly all tv’s with HDMI inputs have a optical output. I have 2 TV’s that i use the optical out going to my surround using the 360 with HDMI. Unless its a really cheap LCD tv or old one i don’t see this coming in handy at all.
Posted 11 Jan 2009 at 1:54 pm ¶thanks a lot for this tip..had an old hd and a hdmi cable and got the arcade model to save some pennies
glad I didnt fork out for the hdmi adaptor
thanks again
Posted 13 Jan 2009 at 12:07 pm ¶Thanks for the hack, works perfectly!
Regarding the issue with the Xbox rebooting when switching A/V inputs, there’s an easy solution: Just pry open the metal housing and cut the thin black cable looping to itself (it’s pin 26 to 28) and use the cable on SD switch setting.
Posted 13 Jan 2009 at 12:59 pm ¶Thank you so much, I was almost about to buy a digital surround sound reciever, just so i could have sound out of my speaks i have set up! have a nice hdmi cable, but the hdtv has no analog audio out!! so thanks to your genius (but ghetto rigged) idea I now have full sound for my games and movies!! Thanks a million. I owe you one, if you ever need a favor just lemme know!

so if im right you could have audio coming out of stereo speakers and tv speakers AND hdmi quality

Posted 25 Jan 2009 at 3:10 pm ¶Googled “hdmi with optical xbox360″ and this was the first result. I was actually very surprised; not only was it the first hit, but it described the problem AND offered a quick solution. Literally took me 45 seconds to do this!
I do have one suggestion, for those out there who would like to do this without damaging the connector in any way. Jam a sharp knife between the top of the metal connector and the plastic surrounding it. After you push the knife in far enough, the plastic will snap open. No broken snap pegs, and no external blemishes on the connector.

“Mostly all tv’s with HDMI inputs have a optical output. I have 2 TV’s that i use the optical out going to my surround using the 360 with HDMI. Unless its a really cheap LCD tv or old one i don’t see this coming in handy at all.”
I work in retail, and we sell several “really cheap” LCDs which have TOSLINK. We also sell several expensive LCDs which do not have TOSLINK. Cost is not the issue, because TOSLINK is available on $30 DVD players. The issue is implementation preference by the TV manufacturer.
Also, using Chad’s method cuts out the “middleman”, so to speak. Audio will no longer need to be rerouted by the TV’s circuits from the HDMI input to the TOSLINK output. Audio will go directly to the surround system while video goes directly to the TV, therefore reducing A/V delay.

Posted 05 Feb 2009 at 12:37 pm ¶What setting do i put the component cable on? HDTV or TV?? Or does it even matter?
Posted 05 Feb 2009 at 1:45 pm ¶nice job!
Posted 06 Feb 2009 at 11:24 am ¶Reasons to use this mod:
#1 You have an older AV receiver that lacks HDMI but has an optical TOSLink connection for Dolby Digital audio.
#2 You have to use DVI port because your TV/monitor lacks HDMI and/or has no more component inputs
#3 You have a really old receiver or a basic 2ch amp that has no HDMI or optical inputs and your TV somehow has an HDMI port and no RCA audio outs
HDMI picture is no better than the 1080p over the component, seriously. HDMI has been struggling just to get where it is today. Now touting their 1.3a standards with deep color palettes, 120hz, etc. LOL!!! CRAP!! There isn’t any form of media available(blu-ray included) that even supports this BS. The only thing HDMI really brings to the table now is 7.1CH LPCM uncompressed audio in the form of Dolby True HD and DTS HD Master Audio. Now that HD-DVD is out of the picture, Bluray is the only thing to take advantage.
If you are using the red and white RCA jacks for audio you might as well use the audio out from your tv to your amp/receiver.
However, all this being said, I have an HDMI receiver and I do have one beef: if I don’t power on the TV and receiver for several seconds before turning on the Xbox it defaults to 2ch PCM. I have to restart the Xbox again or go into the Xbox audio options and change it from Dolby Digital to something else then change it back. When I used to use the component and optical connection it was always Dolby Digital.
Posted 07 Feb 2009 at 7:34 pm ¶There’s only downside to this. If you shut down your TV when using hdmi (or just switch to another input) and that other cable for audio, the console thinks you want to use analog output and it restarts… at least it does this with my VGA cable. It does this even when you are playing. If someone knows how to fix this or somehow bypass, I’d be really interested. Personally this drives me crazy as I have x360, PS3 and PC connected to my television and frequently switch between them.
Posted 12 Feb 2009 at 8:35 am ¶Jeeze is there no site where fanboys fight over whose console is the best. This tutorial was designed for 360 owners. so why the heck would some PS3 Fanboy use it against it. After all its just a mod
Posted 15 Feb 2009 at 2:37 am ¶I did this hack like a month ago (broke the casing around the A/V cable that came with the Xbox) and ran HDMI to my TV. Worked absolutely wonderful until I got the RROD when I changed tv inputs, here recently. I’m sending my xbox in for repair today. Do you think my warranty is void since I modded the cables?
Posted 16 Feb 2009 at 12:00 pm ¶Dude, this is awesome!
Posted 16 Feb 2009 at 2:50 pm ¶I’m still getting an elite but thanks for sharing this with the community.
Thanks for posting this trick! My original Xbox crapped out last week… issue with graphics not shading that I suspect was brought on by the new Xbox experience. Anyway just picked up an Arcade version which has the HDMI port but really didn’t feel like spring $50 for a new cable. Anyway thanks for saving me $30!
Posted 17 Feb 2009 at 8:53 pm ¶Thank you for showing everyone how to do this! I did NOT want to spend $50 on crap I don’t need. I bought a 3rd party RCA cable for it ($15) and it wouldn’t let me choose HD when I had both plugged in. Before I saw your blog post, I was thinking about sanding it down or something… I never thought to just pry it apart!
Thanks!

I now can put the audio cable in my home cinema and the Hdmi cable in the tv.
The plastic thing just pops out very easily and the cable without the plastic works perfectly.
Thanks a lot for such an easy solution !

I own a ps3, 2 xboxes, wii, psp and ds … and I have to say: MS knows how to press out money from customers
not only the hdmi package, but also the battery pack for the controllers is somewhat strange, not really green technology.
One more hint: If your cable went broke with this action … try dealextreme (google it up) … they’ve got so many of those that they sell it

Posted 06 Aug 2009 at 4:28 pm ¶Thanks for the tip
For all the people that have their 360 reboot everytime they try to watch videos, I figured out the fix! I found one post from a year ago about a guy taping some of the pins in the AV cable but he never said which. So after a few hours of testing things, I figured out which ones he taped to stop his 360 from rebooting.
This works for using the red and white stereo cables. I can’t test the optical since I don’t have surround sound. But I don’t see why it wouldn’t work, someone test it out.
OK
If you take the cable out and face the end at you, you can see all the pins. Make sure the TV/HDTV switch is on the right side. You get a skinny piece of clear “magic” tape. Should be only about 1/4 inch wide, and as only as long as the tape is wide..like 3/4 inch (this is so you can cover the whole pins and wrap it to the outside.)
You only have to tape over the 2 pins on the bottom left side if you’re holding it like I said. Only put the tape in far enough to touch the back of the hole, then fold the rest over the outside and stick it down. Last thing to do is make sure the switch on the side of the cable cover is set to TV. It won’t output sound if it’s on HDTV. Plug it in along with your HDMI cable and that’s it!
Posted 14 Aug 2009 at 2:41 am ¶Works great! This saved me like 40 euros or so. Thanks so much!

Posted 05 Sep 2009 at 8:05 pm ¶For people saying to run optical from the TV… most TVs will not send the 5.1 signal out from the optical output, not when the input is HDMI. The optical output on TVS will output digital sound when it’s from the TV tuner.

Posted 25 Sep 2009 at 1:10 pm ¶I did this mod over a year ago and it’s still working, now I’m thinking about upgrading my stereo receiver from a 5.1 to 7.1 and have forgotten why the xbox won’t export digital audio. Maybe it was with my current setup. My receiver doesn’t have hdmi, but a new receiver should receive the digital audio from the xbox thru the hdmi port, correct? I’m running the optical to my receiver and hdmi to tv. I know the ps3 has that option, of course I have it hooked up now with an optical too.
Also, I had a problem with my xbox restarting after changing inputs on my receiver and tv and by adding an hdmi switch between the xbox and tv it fixed the issue, no more restarting and a $30.00 solution. I’m guessing a receiver with hdmi will fix this too.
Posted 30 Sep 2009 at 2:43 am ¶This tip is great. Although my TV has a digital optical output, something is lost in the translation. My xbox sound far better with the digital optical audio cable going directly from the xbox to the surround sound receiver. Thanks!
Posted 04 Oct 2009 at 12:21 am ¶Been cursing a bit during the day as I lacked the possibility to hook up my digital reciever to the Xbox, and then I read in this post that the elite has some sort of adapter that is shipped with it …

Posted 27 Oct 2009 at 3:46 pm ¶OK 2 things, one: you rock thank-you i was fretting not having any audio when i bought the HDMI cable and the monitor speakers decided to take a dump on me. Two: i do commercial HVAC work for a living which means i also deal a lot with electrical, and take my word for it, after taking it out of the plastic WRAP it with electrical tape for both safety and performance purposes. just be sure not to get the tape on the exposed wires, rather taping around the insulated part of the wire and then onto the metal housing.
Posted 06 Nov 2009 at 5:06 pm ¶I did this but in another way. I removed the casing from the HDMI cable, thus saving the A/V cable from any harm. Works good.

One poster asks why it is necessary at all as the HDMI cable carries the audio, well I have a Panasonic TV without audio out so have been forced to stream music with terrible sound. Now I just have the analogue audio going into my stereo amp (phono). Good enough for me!
Movies, music, games all in glorious stereo.
Thanks so much.

I have paid $50 for a HDMI cable so I can play Xbox on my Computer monitor, but Ihave no (ZERO) audio.
If I break apart that grey plastic housing, and plug in the HDMI to my monitor, but also plug in the RCA outputs, will I be able to use the RCA audio outputs even thought there is also an HDMI cable plugged in at the same time?
Posted 15 Dec 2009 at 9:44 am ¶I have another problem… I broke the plastic off the AV cable, plugged it and the HDMI cable into the xbox 360, HDMI to my 22″ Acer Monitor and AV audio with another adaptor into my PC speakers…

THX a lot! Now I can enjoy HDMI and 5.1 Sound with my new Beamer

Posted 21 Dec 2009 at 3:01 pm ¶THANKS DBB, you are my hero, everytime i plugged in the av and hdmi cable i got no sound or picture, but just like you said, just covering up those two pins gets the video through the hdmi and the audio through the Red and White(i dont have optical), although i used a piece of paper, like 3cm long(so i can grab it) and 5mm width, enough to cover those 2 pins.
For those who have the same problem than I, just cover pins number 2 & 4 of the picture
Posted 24 Dec 2009 at 9:17 am ¶http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2006/11/wiring3_engadget_howto.jpg
with tape or paper, that’ll do
I was running the x-box via HDMI lead, so I had HD picture, however on my television the Digital out seems only to export sound from the TV tuner, not from any HD input. By modifying the cable supplied, as suggested, I am able to export the audio into to the back of the surround system (because I can now get both cables in x-box at once), So now running HD & 5.1. at no extra expense Great tip! Thanks!!!

Posted 29 Dec 2009 at 10:04 pm ¶Hey, great idea and all but i think i’ve come up with a better solution[:
The entire point of this was to basically get HD from your 360 and be able to hook it up to your surround sound without buying the 50$ cord Microsoft created, right?
Why don’t you just get some Regular A/V cables, and run them from the OUT on your TV to your surround sound?
Not only would this be easier, it would look much better, and anything that goes through your TV could now be listened to via your Sorround sound.
If your TV has HDMI capability i’m sure it has Audio out[:

Posted 23 Jan 2010 at 9:16 pm ¶Chad, you deserve money and other fine things!
Bill Gates is a prick’s prick’s prick!
I was disgusted at xmas to find that my child’s new Elite 120GB console - which kindly comes with only the “crappy composite cable” now, also features the deliberately & pointlessly thick “Gates-plug” to prevent the slimmest HDMI cable fitting in.
I used a strong but fine pocket knife to pry the top off by gently sliding it along the seam where you used the screwdriver. I also carefully worked my way around the top section, inserting the thin blade between the metal plug & the plastic to break the seal a little. Then it easily popped open without a mark, leaving the lower half of the shell alone & the metal plug intact. I just wrapped it up in some insulation tape & in it went alongside the HDMI easily…!
Man that bastard is evil… Damn plug is 1/2 full of air..!
So thanks Chad!
Now I have HDMI for video @ 1080p & a set of composite outputs for L&R audio to the amp.
————————————————–
Q: How many empty plug 1/2 shells can you fit up Bill’s arse?
A: I don’t know but let’s find out…! >:-@

Works like a charm. I’d actually be willing to pay you 1/2 of the retail for this fix, if I didn’t cut my fthumb, a chisle (much wider than a screw driver) works much more efficiently. I am curious about the guys with the reboots and no video, I wonder if they have a machine with a different board?

[…] Well, Halo 3 has been released as many of you already know and had $170 Million in sales in the first day. Halo was a big hit when it first came out, and Bungie has only proved their reputation with the release of the 3rd part of the Halo Series. And I don’t think it will be the last release of Halo, as it’s a huge cash cow for Microsoft. The 2nd release was pretty hyped up, but it seems that everyone was trying to make money off of this release of Halo. Mountain Dew/Pepsi even has what they call “Halo 3 Game Fuel”. Microsoft has created a plethora of Xbox 360 accessories revolving around Halo 3, including but not limited to Halo 3 branded controllers, Halo 3 Zune, Legendary Edition Halo 3 Game, Halo 3 headset, and even a Halo 3 accessory case to hold all of this. With all of this Halo 3 Hype, it’s hard not to get wrapped up in it by whipping out your credit card and start a collection of Halo 3 stuff if you are a Halo fan.
